Wally v Fatty! - 1978 Valleys v Wests BRL Knock-out semi, Aug 27 @ Lang Park (no commentary)
Watch Paul 'Fatty' Vautin and 'King' Wally Lewis battle it out in their rookie first grade seasons, in this quality BRL finals' clash @ Lang Park from 1978. The Panthers were winding down after their mid-70's peak, while Valleys were on the up after a re-building period between 75-77. The Diehards would ultimately go on to make the Grand Final against Easts and their defeat in that match would serve them well, heading into what turned out to be a hugely successful 1979 season.
It's great to see these two grand old clubs battle it out on the big stage back when BRL was king in Brisbane. You can still see them go around in the BRL Premier A Grade competition.

1978 Valleys v Redcliffe, Aug 20 @ Lang Park
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Месяц назад
The Redcliffe Dolphins finished BRL minor premiers in 1978 and they consolidated top spot with this 20-17 victory over a fast-finishing Valleys in the final round before the semis. This rare Channel 7 footage showcases the 10 minutes of play after half-time. Unfortunately, there was no sound, so I added some 'BRL noise' to give it extra life. The two teams would meet again a few weeks later in ...

Brothers were getting stronger heading towards the 87 finals series, while the Jets' top-four chances were starting to slip. Watch Smokin Joe, Grogan and Mohr run rampant over Tommy's troops.

No Alfie, no worries! Despite missing Allan Langer to Queensland Origin duty, Tommy's Jets still had enough in the tank to down the disappointing Seagulls-Diehards in this Lang Park clash July 12, 1987.
Seagulls-Diehards v Wynnum-Manly 28/6/87 @ Lang Park

The big spending Seagulls-Diehards (Valleys) were massive under-achievers in 1987 and they were desperate for a win in this one against 86 premiers Wynnum-Manly, who still had King Wally and Geno on their roster for 87.

Magpies start their 1985 premiership run v Valleys @ Lang Park

Wayne Bennett's Souths Magpies were struggling at the mid-point of the 1985 season, holding onto to equal-fourth position with Easts following three-straight defeats. History suggests the boys from West End would go onto win the comp and this match against the Diehards is where their glory run would begin.

1984 BRL Knockout Semi - Valleys v Redcliffe @ Lang Park (plus match preview)

Despite having to go through a mid-week 4th spot play-off, the Dolphins went into the Knockout Semi against Valleys firm favourites. They beat the Diehards just seven days earlier (24-16) to hold a 2-1 overall winning record against them leading into this game. Redcliffe had several Test and state players in their squad, while Valleys had just one (Incumbent QLD halfback Ross Henrick). But that...
1990 BRL Prelim Final - Norths v Redcliffe @ Lang Park
Просмотров 4294 месяца назад
The Devils' run towards a 1990 BRL Grand Final appearance continued with this epic extra-time prelim final thriller against Mark Murray's Redcliffe Dolphins, who have been super-consistent all season. Murray's efforts as Redcliffe mentor in 1990 paved the way for a contract with Easts in Sydney as the head coach for 1991. But Muppet's men could not contain Tommy's troops when it counted, with t...
Devils make the BRL finals 1990 - Norths v Brothers @ Lang Park
Просмотров 8684 месяца назад
This was a crucial late season game between BRL rivals Norths and Brothers. A win for Norths would seal a spot in the top-four, while a Brothers victory would see the Broncos-affiliated club sneak in on the proviso Souths beat Easts. History says Norths made the four and would get as far as the 1990 grand final. Lord Darryl Duncan stepped up at the right time to take the game away from the Bret...

Great try, great pass , cowboy , parr , should watch this.
Man Fuck mellow yellow, tastes like shit
I love mellow yellow ❤❤❤❤
I am proud to say i played against him and along side him ...what a player. Great memories of lang park. 👍👍
Jesus Wept! Mahatma Cote….
Big Mal and the raised elbow.
‘78 Parramatta reserves would have thrashed either of these sides
Pretty typical Sydney attitude towards all BRL even now when BRL history is ignored. 79 Valleys team would have pulled down the pants of everyone in Sydney the next year
3 nhi bhai 4 mari hai k sangakara. Mene pura dekha tha😊
Now that’s serious business
We talked about this Dutts much respect 👍
Nice one Dutts your a legend mate 👍 funny , great guy , great times
A unit of a man Much respect and those who shared the paddock with flare , passion dedication commitment just a few that come to mind , many others that contributed gave the same and attained that same status and recognition Much appreciated respect but there is only one Big Mal
True story. I was at the North Ipswich Reserve when Alf made his first appearance in reserve grade Jets. Fans were joking this schoolboy should not be there. 2 years later he is Maroons half back.
That hair man. Carrot top.
I'll never forget the time Steve Renouf was on BFS and was asked by the female (Rebecca Wilson, I think her name was) "How do you handle your knockers?" Room full of boys, well, you know what happened. Sniggers all round.
Appreciate sharing of this Archive ol scool footy awesome
Ref totally bought off , Len Ditmar much respect your a legend , your mate Wayne Bennett will sanction that 👍
You can tell he rarely, if ever has run that far in a game.
Legendary Wests Panthers
Amen❤😂🎉🎉🎉😂😂🎉😢
Alan Milla - the best fullback never to play for Australia.
My word, Fatty showed more toe than a roman sandal. He looked pretty trim too.
he must have been called fitty back in those days
0:42 🤣🤣🤣
What a great game. No bunker, no stoppages and a well called game without psychological commentary.
Much preferred the bris footy show. Tony durkin, badge, great stuff Jacko was a legend.bombalas was a good host.
The game was pretty much rubbish because the ref was embarrassingly bad. He should be ashamed of himself. No wonder Queensland like beating NSW these days.
Referee seem to blow the whistle every scrum to Qld.
Big Mal always was & always will be a fuckin beast
Prefer this commentary to the history of the game we get with every tackle today.
Wasn't Ray Ovens in this team?
Young Bull 🐂 Old Bull this wasn't the first time Mel got over uncle Arthur he was getting a bit long in the tooth by then two of Rugby league finest R.I.P. uncle
typical meninga try, really
Before the introduction of the Broncs, these 2 sides had an awesome rivalry. Sad the die-hards died.
I was there, in the grandstand. It was nearly a riot due to dissatisfaction with the referee and his decisions. Did you notice the 3 point tries, pushing in the scrums, 4 tackle rule, and a five yard rule for defending and attacking sides. They also used a leather ball and they could be slippery to hang onto. This game was the catalyst for banning cans at Lang Park. Holman, the ref, never came back to QLD again as far as i can remember.
Was it 1917 or 1971
@@James-ce6ic Very funny! Everyone knows that Bennet was still in Europe with the Army in 1917.
NSW playing grubby tactics as usual ...
I was riding around the edge of a pool when mikes with cigar in one hand picked my bike up with me still on it and tossed it in to the deep end 😂😂 I feel this is a better experience of his true strength than palming off Alf 😂😂😂
Miles pushing of the smallest guy to ever play the game...gee woopeee.
Yeah Mel always be the man brother
I think they got the date wrong 1917
They were the Broncos feeder club at that time , so both had input i guess
A definite standout .👏👏
Thx , love seeing any Dolphins from the 70's era Interesting, thought Cherry was a centre and Obst a second-rower A young Wally at lock. 5/8th McWhirter was a great player
Wally Lewis? must have been his first year in A grade. Cheers for that flashback. I was 12 sitting on the score board wall. Surreal.
This would probably be the earliest televised footage still around of Wally playing. I know there's the 78 GF, but that was about a month later.
Some players can play 5/8. Obst was a FB, centre.
The quality of the game is a disgrace. Thank god origin was invented from this
Ha
Daly cherry evans dad playing hooker for norths
How the games improved over the years 👍them scums what a joke ; the whole game clunky as fuck it’s a wonder they can run in them socks
Mal Malingerer !!!! Rugby League Dynamite Demolition Machine. Go big MAL !!! Get to prison Bevin.
Back when people had a sense of humour
Anyone else find this looking to see if there was any footage of that iconic old guy who used to yell the same thing in that era?
The crowds are still tiny 50 years later
From the way the commentators are speaking, it sounds like it’s an early rendition of state of origin
This game was instrumental in developing the 'spirit' of Origin and how it means something to Queenslanders. On that day they were the underdogs, up against a classy NSW side. By the end of the game they only had ten men left on the field to the NSW 13. Added to that, the refereeing was appalling and one-sided. That is why the crowd was so emotive at the end. That and the fact that the ref was from NSW as well. The televised broadcast does not really capture what contributed to that response. I was in the grandstand and witnessed a lot of hostility. A decade later a point was proven but the legacy of 1971 and all the other beatings QLD received through that period, remained. The standard of football back then was not as good as today, but the intensity was the same. As a 12 year old spectator watching that game it was the most exciting thing in town. We rushed home after the game just so we could watch the one hour highlights broadcast on the ABC at 6 o'clock. This was what was shown here. We were still winging about the ref for years to come.
@@markbowman2890 thank you for that insight and personal sentiments of the game, I really appreciate that :)
